ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: An Honest Side-by-Side Comparison

We tested ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini on real tasks. Here's what each does well, where each falls short, and how to choose the right one for you.

One of the first things we do in our Flagship course is run a structured, transparent, side-by-side comparison of the three major AI chatbots. Here's what we've learned from doing this with hundreds of students.

The Test

We give all three tools identical prompts across five categories: creative writing, factual research, data analysis, personal advice, and professional task completion. Then we evaluate the outputs together as a class.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Strengths: Broad general knowledge, strong at creative writing and brainstorming, extensive plugin ecosystem, image generation with DALL-E.

Weaknesses: Tends toward confident-sounding outputs even when wrong. The "helpful assistant" personality can feel sycophantic. Privacy practices have been questioned. The company's trajectory from nonprofit to for-profit raises governance questions.

Claude (Anthropic)

Strengths: Thoughtful, nuanced responses. Better at saying "I don't know" or flagging uncertainty. Strong at long document analysis. Projects, Connectors, Artifacts, Memory, and Skills create a genuine workspace, not just a chat window.

Weaknesses: Smaller plugin ecosystem than ChatGPT. Can be overly cautious. Image generation capabilities are newer and less mature.

Gemini (Google)

Strengths: Deep integration with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Calendar). Strong at real-time information retrieval. Competitive on technical tasks.

Weaknesses: Outputs can feel generic. The integration with Google's advertising ecosystem raises privacy questions. Has had notable public failures with factual accuracy.

Our Recommendation

We adopt Claude as our primary recommended tool — not because it's perfect, but because the recommendation is principled. After the side-by-side comparison, students understand exactly why they're choosing Claude: the workspace model, the approach to safety, and the quality of outputs for the kinds of tasks they'll actually be doing.

The goal isn't brand loyalty. It's informed choice.
